The Lord's Supper's Looks

Paul wrote of the Lord’s Supper, “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26).

The Lord’s Supper looks backward. It is a memorial of Jesus’ death for us, His self-sacrifice that is the atonement for our sins. It is vital that we keep our focus on Him, “fixing our eyes on Jesus” (Hebrews 12:2).

The Lord’s Supper looks forward. We are to eat it until He comes. It is just as vital that we stay focused on eternity: “we look not at the things which are seen but at the things that are unseen” (2 Corinthians 4:18).

The Lord’s Supper looks outward. By eating it we proclaim the Lord’s death, both the fact of it and our participation in it (1 Corinthians 10:16). It is one way in which we say to the world that Jesus saves.

Verse 28 adds a fourth look: inward, not to see if we are worthy—no one is—but to ensure we are eating the Supper in the proper way.
