Beware

Jesus said. . .

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 6:1). Motive matters. Trying to impress people will always make us come up short in pleasing God.

“Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves” (Matthew 7:15). Truth matters. Don’t assume that someone is preaching it just because he sounds good or seems sincere.

“Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues, and places of honor at banquets, who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation” (Luke 20:46-47). Humility matters. Rather than seeking prominence, we must be humble enough to serve God and man.

“Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions” (Luke 12:15). Stuff doesn’t matter. We are not necessarily better off with more of it (especially when it comes time to move!). It might even get in our way.
